Emergency money can be found by cutting back on digital services

Digital providers post-recession

Many people are looking to build up their emergency money funds. They have scoured their budgets looking for that one item that is unnecessarily increasing their monthly expenses. Consumers are finding that a major money drain is their monthly cost for digital services.

The recession was a difficult time for companies to get through, and that includes digital providers. Before the economic downturn, they were already elevating prices and using "bundles" to hide costs and extra fees. Once the market made a turn for the worse, they continued to lift prices in an effort to mitigate their own losses. The result was bulked up digital bills for millions of customers.

Digital providers and your money

When it comes to cable, satellite and telephone companies, they are overjoyed when customers never read their bills. They know what has long been an insider secret: once people start paying for a service, they get lax. If a bill was $49.99 at the beginning of the year and increases slowly to $59.99 by mid-year, most consumers won't notice, particularly those who have direct bill pay services attached to the account. Steve Sandel, finance analyst in New York, said, "It's easy to become complacent with paying bills in today's society. So much can be handled automatically that it puts customers at a disadvantage when costs increase. Most companies know this and increase fees little by little throughout the year." … click here to read the rest of the article titled “Emergency money can be found by cutting back on digital services

How to Save Money Moving

When you finally make the decision to move, the process can seem overwhelming. Packing up an entire household with furniture, clothes, toys and everything that goes with it is daunting, but turning the job over to the professionals is painfully expensive. There are some relatively simple ways to cut costs and still get the job done right, so let me list them out below.

Know where you are going

This sounds simple, right? Yet, not many people take the time to measure out your new floor plan and make sure they know exactly where everything is going. The sofa that fit in this home may not fit in the next, so why move it? Get your floor plan, figure out what fits and what doesn't, and sell, give away or donate anything you won't need in the new house.

Once you know where everything is going, put a big numbered sign in each room in the new house. Label all your boxes and furniture with the same number and you won't have to haul things around the house when the movers leave.

Get Rid of It

I admit I'm a bad wife. Before my family moved cross-country, I started a surreptitious plan to get rid of my pack-rat husband's collection of “we might need it someday” junk. We got rid of anything we hadn't touched for more than a year and donated or sold about a third of our stuff. The cash paid for moving the big items we didn't want to handle.

Books, toys, exercise equipment, planters and clothes all add weight very quickly. If you are paying movers, the less you move, the cheaper it is. Even if you pack yourself and just pay for the shipping, every box adds to your cost.

There are things you need to get rid of because moving them costs more than buying new. Toiletries, swing sets, pianos, rugs, pantry staples and plants are expensive to move and are just as available in your new home. If you are moving locally they may be worth moving, but with a long distance move everything should be considered with an eye to replacement.

The Nitty Gritty
Many moving companies will sell you used boxes for a lot less than new ones, so call around first. Don't use liquor store boxes and grocery store boxes if you can avoid them. They come in odd sizes that don't pack well into a truck. Purchase some newssheets from the moving company since regular newspaper is dirty, and some bubble wrap from your local office supply warehouse for fragile items.

Use your linens and towels to wrap fragile items, that way you don't have to pack them on their own, and you provide additional protection to special things. Pack heavy items like books in small boxes and light items in larger ones. Label every box.

Take out the trash!

Friends of mine moved from New Jersey to California and took 3 weeks to travel during the move. Imagine their surprise when they started opening boxes and found month old trash inside. The moving company was told to move everything and they did.

Trucking Along

If you are renting a truck make sure you reserve it for enough time to pack up, move and unpack. Shop around for deals on one-way fees and mileage, but always check out the company with the Better Business Bureau before you sign a contract.

If you are hiring movers, packing on your own saves a lot of money. Only work with reliable companies and insist upon a weigh in before and after they load your stuff. That way you only pay for what you put on, not an estimate.

Hit the Road

Nothing is left to do once everything is packed up but hit the road. Make sure you arrive first and are there to let the movers in. In a long distance move they will just leave after a certain amount of time and store your stuff, as yours is not the only house packed on that truck and they have a schedule to keep. You don't want the extra fees anyway. Make sure you have an old phone book with you in case you need those numbers, and drive safely.

Howard Zinn joins the pages of history at 89

‘A People’s History’ author passes away

Howard Zinn From Wikimedia Commons

Recently, one of the giants of the study of history passed away at the age of 89, from heart failure.  Howard Zinn was an academic giant, and many praised him as a revolutionary, others decrying him as being ‘Anti-American’ along with other pejoratives for his take on American history.  He published numerous works, including plays that won great acclaim, and historical books, including the seminal work ‘A People’s History of the United States’ which cast a light on the American past that was provocative and illuminating, winning plaudits and criticism.  The book won’t cost you even a payday loans worth - it goes for less than $30 - but it’s worth reading, to say the least.

Humble beginnings

Zinn was born in 1922, to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Europe.  He joined the Army Air Corps in World War 2, serving as a bombardier.  After the war, he attended college on the GI Bill, attaining his Bachelor’s from New York University in 1951, and Masters’ and a PhD from Columbia.  He wrote his dissertation on Fiorello LaGuardia, the legislator and Mayor of New York City, entitled LaGuardia in Congress, which won the Beveridge Prize from the American Historical Association. … click here to read the rest of the article titled “Howard Zinn joins the pages of history at 89

This Bike's for You!

The days are getting longer again which can only mean one thing: the Spring cycling season is almost here! If you’re in the market for a new bike, it’s a great time to start looking. Have you considered these brands?

Top Searched Bicycles on AOL Search:
1. Trek
2. Giant
3. KHS
4. Schwinn
5. Diamondback
6. Mongoose
7. Citizen Bike
8. Cannondale
9. Huffy
10. Raleigh

One of the most important considerations for your bike purchase is the kind of riding you’re planning to do. The good news is that there are now great options available across many styles and price points.

If you have desire to channel your inner Lance Armstrong, check out a road bike. These bikes are built for speed. They feature drop handlebars for an aggressive riding position and skinny, high-pressure tires to decrease rolling resistance. They perform best on smooth surfaces and can be well-suited to recreational riding and longer commutes as well as racing. Road bikes are available in a variety of materials including steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber. You’ll want to consider weight, ride feel and price when choosing between materials. Trek, #1 on our list, has made bikes for Lance (and many other professional racers) for year! s, but they also offer a number of great options for more casual riders, too. Both Trek and #8 Cannondale offer several road bikes for women.

Do you dream of peddling through the woods and jumping over rocks and streams? With their fat, grippy tires and small frames for easier control on rough terrain, mountain bikes are made for off-roading. Many also offer disc brakes for improved performance when it matters most. But keep in mind that not all mountain bikes are created equal. Nearly all modern mountain bikes offer front suspension to cushion a rough ride, but if you’re planning to do very technical riding, you may want to consider a full-suspension mountain bike. Giant, our #2 searched brand, offers an array of mountain bikes from hard-tail lifestyle bikes to pro-level free-ride bikes with up to 7 inches of rear travel.

Urban bikes are all about utility. If you’re planning a short commute to and from work or run errands on your new bike, this is probably the best choice for you. Most urban bikes are moderately priced, made from steel or aluminum and offer a relaxed riding position. Some even come outfitted with fenders and racks. Fixed-gear bikes also fall into this class. While they’ve been the go-to style for bike messengers for years, fixies have recently gained widespread popularity for their simplicity and responsiveness. Schwinn, #4 on our list, and #10 Raleigh are classic names in cycling that offer a number of retro-styled urban bikes in fixed-gear, single-speed and multiple speed models. If space or storage is an issue, a folding bike such as those made by #7 Citizen Bike may offer a great balance of form and function.

While you’re in the bike shop, don’t forget to pick up the things you need to protect yourself and your investment. A “brain bucket” might not be stylish, but a bicycle helmet can provide essential protection in a crash. Look for one that carries a seal of approval from ANSI, the CPSC or the Snell Memorial Foundation. You may also want to consider a pair of cycling gloves to pad your hands if you’ll be riding long distances. A good quality U-lock such as those offered by Kryptonite Locks is generally the best all-around option for theft deterrence. Choose one that allows you to secure both the front! wheel and the frame to a bike rack.

Happy riding!

Plans to Manage Debt

Debt management plans refer to a type of structured repayment plan that has been set up by a third party. This is with the intention of assisting the debtor with the repayment of his debt. Helping a debtor to clear the debts at a reduced level over a fixed period of time is the objective of debt management. The responsibility of helping the debtor make a fresh start with their finances also lies with them.

When to Use These Services

This is a difficult subject for many people. People look to avoid seeking help in financial matters. People look to take care of it themselves until matters spiral out of control. These services are best used when the problem is first diagnosed. Use the services of a debt management company and restore balance to your finances. It can also help you get back on your feet and lead a debt free life.

A debt management company looks to help the average consumer take control of their finances and debts quickly. Understanding the factors leading to the debt from a skilled personal debt counselor will help debtors. They can even help you in the reduction or elimination of current levels of your debt. Debt counselors will also look to create a realistic plan that will carry the debtor to a better future. Debtors mostly do not like making monthly budgets and sticking to them in the long term. In order to lead a debt free life in the future debtors will have to understand the facts as stated by the debt counselor.

How To Decrease Debt

The first place they will look is your budget. Once provided to them, they will be able to advise you on the future course of action. The assessment of your financial situation will take place with a series of questions. The objective here is to assess and get an accurate picture of your finances. You are required to be truly honest with any information that you provide. The debt counselor will find it easier to help you in a specific direction with the information that you provided. These questions will also help to determine the amount you can pay comfortably every month.

The Final Steps

Once the payment amount has been determined, the debt counselor will approach your creditors. Your creditors will be requested by your debt counselor to accept a reduced schedule of payments apart from stopping all further charges. The objective is to have a payment schedule that is different and is comfortable to the debtor. These plans are looked upon as realistic in the long term by creditors and accepted in most cases. You can choose the option of a single monthly payment, which they will distribute on your behalf to your creditors. Care should be taken when choosing a debt management company. It is strongly advised that only reputed debt management companies are selected after due inquiries. You should have the best of the lot at your disposal, as you look to get out of the financial mess you are in.

Finding Affordable Health Insurance

The Great Health Insurance Odyssey

Deciding upon a particular health insurance plan for you may seem like a difficult task. With a little online research, you can find several quotes from various providers. If you want quotes coming to you at home, submitting some basic information is all that is needed. This process does not take long at all, regardless of what you think. Online options have made getting health insurance quotes very easy. Some may even consider it too easy and fear that strings are attached. If they talk with someone on the phone, they think they will get a better quote. This is simply not the truth. It is very easy to get a quote online without having to sign up for services.

Convenience at your Fingertips

Changing times have made the internet a viable option for conducting financial transactions. The banking and insurance industries have gone online to meet the needs of their customers. Take the time to understand that these institutions are regulated by certain laws and standards. It is possible to safely look for the best deals available without having to call or visit an agent. To get these best deals, all you need is to be connected to the internet. Before the week is over, you will get your quotes. Within minutes, you will have your quotes.

Making the Purchase

One of the first steps you need to take when purchasing health insurance online is to conduct a thorough research. Many bargains and discounts are offered by several companies to tempt you into doing business with them. Take the time to choose the deal that will suit you best. Just as you would shop around for the best deals when buying a car or a house, shop around for the best health insurance. It is important to do your homework before buying health insurance, if you want to save money. Should you find a company that you want to do business with, be sure to read reviews about them first. You will then be able to understand what the company is about. By doing this, you will also save yourself some headaches later.

Final Advice

Do not hesitate to seek advice from your friends or relatives about the company and the plan that you are looking to invest in. Due consideration of every detail should be taken before making the final decision. Take the time to do this, and then submit your information. Make a note of the prices they offer and the coverage they are willing to provide. Confusing terms are also in the fine print, so do not forget to read this. Any questions you have should be answered by the insurer. It is your money, so you have a right to know what you are getting. All details of the form should be understood before you sign on the dotted line.

Take a Secured Personal Loan for your Wedding

The Ceremony of your Life

Attendant Gifts at The Knot Wedding ShopA wedding is always important, because it is a step that every couple looks to take with the intention of starting a new life. However weddings do not come cheap. They can cost money that is not available to the couple. They may want to spend the money to make this event a memorable one, but the lack of money may hold them back and not allow them to accomplish what they want. This can now be taken care of by a secured personal loan for weddings.

Amount Loaned

We are talking about a secured loan and this means that you will need to offer some collateral against the money that you are looking to fund your wedding with. The amount that you eventually borrow will depend on the collateral that you are able to offer. The actual amount of money loaned can be between $ 5,000 to $ 50,000, and more in some cases. The generosity of the lenders reflects in their offers when they offer more money than the value of the collateral. Every lender has a different policy for such loans and will decide upon the final amount to be loaned on individual basis.

No Usage Restrictions

A wedding can be very expensive even before the event has taken place. Food and beverages, the place for the wedding, decorations and more are all expenses that add up very quickly during a wedding. As the reason for the loan is clear, lenders place no restrictions on the type of expenses that you will use the money on. Lenders do not worry about the exact expenses, as the loan offered is secured by collateral. Lenders will not ask for itemized receipts from you, but this does not in any way mean that you can ignore what you are spending the money on. Keep a close eye on the details and how much you are spending on.

Look for the Best Lender

Since you want to take a secured wedding loan and are offering collateral against it, you will be better off with a bank or credit union. However, you should get a number of quotes with different lenders offline, as well as online. On secured loans for weddings there are a number of lenders in the market who can give you better rates and offers. Their terms and conditions will in no way be different from banks and credit unions. Accepting the collateral that you offer will not be a problem.

Transference of Title

One thing you should know when offering collateral is that the title of this collateral will be transferred to the lender. The property will be in your possession, but the lender will hold the title. Just sticking to the terms and conditions of the agreement will keep this worry away from you. If you end up defaulting on loan payments, you will end up losing the property. Your credit does not have to be good to apply for a secured personal wedding loan. People from all walks of life can make use of this wonderful opportunity and make the event a memorable one due to this criteria.

Tim Tebow Superbowl ad has CBS under fire

Women’s groups call for upcoming pro-life ad to be pulled

Super Bowl commercials are always among the highlights of the CBS Super Bowl telecast, and the Sunday, February 7 broadcast of Super Bowl XLIV should be no exception. However, among the entertaining commercial offerings (which will surely include some by payday loan companies), there may be a Tim Tebow Superbowl ad that has pro-choice groups quite upset.

Who is Tim Tebow?

Tim Tebow is the second coming, if you believe Florida Gators football fans. He’s a former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback (2007) who led his team to three bowl victories during his college career. He’s been labeled a “can’t miss” prospect for the 2010 NFL Draft. He is also a devout Christian who is popular with the ladies. It is his faith that prompted him to team with the activist group Focus on the Family for a commercial entitled “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life.”

That sounds well and good, but the 30-second ad has upset pro-choice groups like the Women’s Media Center with its upfront pro-life stance in the very public forum of national television.  In a letter from the group, they made their view of CBS quite clear:

“By offering one of the most coveted advertising spots of the year to an anti-equality, anti-choice, homophobic organization, CBS is aligning itself with a political stance that will damage its reputation, alienate viewers, and discourage consumers from supporting its shows and advertisers.” … click here to read the rest of the article titled “Tim Tebow Superbowl ad has CBS under fire

Using Credit Cards to Pay Off Debt?

Half the Income But All the Bills

A TV commercial for a debt consolidation company aired recently where one woman told us that her work hours got cut in half, but she cannot pay half her bills. They were really wanting you to consolidate your debts into a lower payment in case your income gets drastically cut. When emergencies arise, emergency cash loans do not need to push you further into debt if you are not paying your bills on credit. Credit cards should not be used to pay your bills either. If you were to go to a debt consolidation company, could you really get the same results as you could if you reduced your expenses.

Reduce Expenses

To pay your bills without credit cards, the first thing you need to look at is how much money you are spending every month. Complete and utter honesty must be used! This may include your entertainment and restaurant costs. Over spending may be a problem, which is why you may be needing to pay bill with credit cards in the first place. A lower standard of living does not have to mean you live in sub standard housing or eat Ramen noodles for every meal. Smart budgeting requires you to make some hard choices of what expenses will stay and go. A large house may be nice, but if you cannot afford it, you need to make the hard choice to sell it. A car payment of $ 400 per month may be more than you can afford, so you must sell the car.

Housing, food and transportation costs are the biggest expenses in your budget, and should be planned for accordingly. If a budget is balanced on paper, it will not work if you do not take action immediately. The most difficult step in lowering your bills is to get started.

Debt Repayment Plan

With the massive credit card hikes that have been charged to many people lately, it is imperative that you pay off your credit card debt as soon as possible. Save yourself the headache from the credit card interest rate hikes and pay off your balance now. If you do not want to spend the rest of your life under a mountain of debts, create a debt repayment plan. Get rid of your cards, so that you can be clear to create a debt repayment plan. People may say that credit cards are a necessary evil, but they are not necessary at all. Instead, you can live within your means if you take the time to create a sensible budget. What if you have an emergency that a credit card could take care of. A large amount of savings should be set aside to assist you in any emergency. When time is not an issue, you may be able to get an emergency cash loan to help you through your emergency.

Increase Your Income

No budget worth its salt is complete without a plan to increase your monthly income. If you lost income from your job, or even half of your household income, how are you going to replace it. A recession proof skill will allow you to make money from others who will be willing to pay you for the value you will provide. Look at your talents—do you do something so well that others would pay you to do it for them. Picking up some extra jobs, such as babysitting or organizing may help you earn more money. As a writer, if you can explain difficult concepts, you can make extra money to take care of the shortfall from a cut in income. Your talents are your biggest asset, so take a good look at these. Your skills may eventually land you into a new full time job, which could replace your income.

Smooth Sailing

After creating and implementing your sensible budget, you will wonder how you ever lived with credit card debt in the first place! Simple changes to your budget will take some effort on your part to make it work, but it will work eventually. Long term budgeting will provide space for emergency cash loans!

Robert Pattinson the worst performer on 'Hope for Haiti' telethon (IrishCentral)

Robert Pattinson made an ass of himself on the "Hope for Haiti" telethon last night.

The British star was one of those making an appeal for funds, but proved he couldn’t hack it in the big leagues.

He didn’t even think it important enough to show up live, but his contribution was pre-recorded. He is so much more important than Bono, Madonna, Steven Spielberg, Jack Nicholson or the like. Hey, it's only Haiti.

Letterman must be in the clouds

No one wins bigger in the Leno - O’Brien fiasco, the Jay vs. Conan battle, the ……. well you get it. This could go on forever. Even the battle of the terrible ‘dos or coifs. There is just so much fodder for even the most untalented comedian. But Letterman must be in the clouds. Could anything make his work easier? The one liners, the long drawn out jokes, the gossip. What more could one want for a monologue that has to be fresh and new night after night?

Besides the easy material, Dave is going to get the celebrities. Celebrities are going to be a lot more comfortable visiting CBS for a while until NBC gets their lineup in order. The celebrities will still be looking to NBC for exposure, but they will be looking first to CBS.

Just a few months ago things were so different. Dave Letterman was the source of so much easy material for the comedy circuit. Jay and Conan both took advantage of it. Jay, always a nice guy and in keeping with that image, pulled his punches a little.

Unfortunately, the fiasco at NBC has little to do with Jay or Conan. Conan should have seen this coming, and Jay probably did. Jay is truly a nice guy, and in order to get to the top of an industry, especially one as cutthroat as his, while keeping true to yourself, takes a lot of intelligence. Jay saw it coming, set himself up pretty well, and now has to ride out the rough spots and see how it all settles out. At this point, it looks like Jay will get his old spot back, with possibly a different name, Dave will obviously stay where he is, and Conan will be somewhere. Right now, Conan is the mystery. He has not played his cards so well. He let his ambition get the better of him in thinking that Jay’s Tonight Show audience would stick around for Conan’s edgier style of humor. He has also made threats about leaving NBC, which may be empty threats to NBC now that the network knows exactly what his value is.

The biggest question is the ultimate replacement for Jay, when Jay himself decides to call it quits. NBC should let Jay decide his own fate and the fate of his show. NBC should allow Jay to groom his own replacement in return for a piece of the Tonight Show. This would be such a potentially win-win solution as to the question of the future of the Tonight Show. Unfortunately, win-win is not what corporate America is about, and especially not what Hollywood is about.

In the mean time, until things settle out at NBC, CBS will win the late night ratings and have an inside edge on the prime time slots as well, at least as it stacks up against NBC. Dave Letterman will win across the board.

Oklahoma Earthquake

Get a Renters Insurance Quote

This New Year is shaking

Who ever heard of earthquakes in Oklahoma? The year started out with pretty good temblors in the San Francisco Bay area, then off the coast of Eureka, California and of course the big on in Haiti. But now it is Oklahoma’s turn. Initial reports put the magnitude of the quake at around 4.0. That is a quake that would be felt by many people, but should not cause too much damage. This is apparently the third quake this week in the same area of Oklahoma near Oklahoma City. The two earlier ones were smaller. Quakes just don’t happen very often in that part of the country, so many of those who felt the quake did not realize that a quake had actually occurred.

With so many spotlights on earthquakes recently, there is no excuse for putting off getting prepared for a major catastrophe. Have a coordinated plan amongst your family members as to how to get in touch with each other. Know how to safely exit your home and decide on a safe rendezvous point. Have the recommended types and quantities of supplies on hand at home, and in the trunk of your car. Endeavor to review the plans every six months and rotate your supplies as well.

Hopefully this is the last of the quake news for a while

We are out of hurricane season and peak tornado season does not start until April. Wildfire season is still a few months off, though in some parts of the country, it is always wildfire season due to a string of drier than usual years. So while catastrophe news should be dissipating for a while, we should use this spate of quakes as a reminder, once again, to be prepared. It is relatively easy to do and many aspects of being prepared do not cost anything. Once this important item is checked off of your to-do list, you feel very good about yourself and your chances of surviving a true catastrophe.

Another slip of the earth occurred today in California. The Eureka quake in Northern California was the third and largest of the quakes occurring from the San Francisco Bay area to Eureka. The 6.5 quake caused relatively minor but widespread damage. Power lines were reported down in many locales, items shaken from shelves, and at least one house was knocked off of its foundation. No major injuries seem to have occurred as a result of this latest temblor.

Once again, those of us in earthquake country have been given due warning to be prepared for the inevitable. A big one is coming. This recent earthquake in Eureka was not a big one, due to the strict building codes that are currently in force and which have repeatedly been shown to be so effective. Ultimately, however, no structure can hold up to the wrath of Mother Nature. The building codes stretch out the time between destructive quakes, which is great. They may also lull the public into complacency. So few of us have the requisite amount of emergency supplies stored in the right places and we do not have emergency plans established for our families. Those who do prepare may put themselves at risk in an actual catastrophe as the majority of people will become desperate after a few days without adequate supplies.

Once again, take the Eureka earthquake as a wake-up call for all of those who are not presently prepared. The recent rash of earthquakes should serve to quicken our pace. Those of us who have set aside supplies need to rotate them to keep them fresh and viable.

There is a seriously destructive quake coming. You best that anyone living in quake country can hope for is to be alive but away on vacation with their family when it occurs. Beyond that, appropriate action now will go a long way to towards making endurance and survival of such an event bearable and maybe even possible. Get your supplies together now and put together an emergency plan with your family. You will be glad you did, your neighbors will be glad you did, and your friends and relatives out of the area will be glad you did. Don’t forget your pets. They will be doubly glad if you remember supplies for them.

Payday Loans are Proving to be Reliable Funding Options

The market has changed

The payday loan is a viable option in today's market. Although a few short years ago the lending world was giving out money freely, things changed after the recession. Lenders were tight-fisted with money due to the huge amount of defaulting loans they had on their hands. While that saved them additional losses, it did little for consumers who were still in need of finding funding to pay bills. Many consumers turned to the payday loan as an option for paying emergency bills. Although these loans traditionally have a much higher! rate of interest, if used properly, they can be viable solutions to budget shortfalls.

The payday loan

A payday loan has few requirements for consumers to meet. Normally all a customer needs to apply is to be over 18 years of age, have an active bank account and be employed. Some companies employ other rules, but in general, these are the basics. The application process is simple and quick. If a customer applies online, they usually get an answer regarding their approval within minutes. If they are approved, then the customer is given an amount of cash that is deposited into their bank account within 48 hours, sometimes sooner. The amount they receive is based on their income and can vary greatly between applicants.

When it comes to paying back the loan, it's just as easy. The loan company will automatically deduct the loan amount and the fee they charged, from the customer's bank account on a specified date—usually the next payday. The simplicity of these loans is what makes them so popular among consumers. They are quick, convenient and offer necessary cash to those who qualify. … click here to read the rest of the article titled “Payday Loans are Proving to be Reliable Funding Options
